A World Cup draw is staged as a formality that arranges an already fair tournament. In practice it distributes difficulty unevenly enough to shape which teams reach the later rounds.

Pots compress genuine differences

Teams are sorted into pots by ranking, and every side inside a pot is then treated as interchangeable. The gap between the best and worst team in a pot is often large.

A group drawing the weakest side from each pot faces a materially easier path than one drawing the strongest. Neither group looks unusual on paper.

The format cannot avoid this without abandoning the pot system, and the pot system exists to prevent something worse. It is a trade rather than an oversight.

The ranking behind the pots is imperfect

International rankings are calculated from results in matches that vary wildly in seriousness, spread across a cycle in which squads change substantially.

Confederations play different volumes of competitive football, which affects how quickly a team's rating moves. Two sides of similar strength can sit in different pots.

The ranking is a reasonable ordering and a poor measuring stick. Using it to define hard boundaries between pots turns small rating gaps into large structural advantages.

Geographic constraints bend the randomness

Draws are usually restricted so that teams from the same confederation avoid each other in the group stage, with an exception for the largest confederation.

Those constraints remove some combinations entirely and make others more likely than a free draw would. The randomness is real but not uniform.

The effect is generally small compared with the pot problem, though it occasionally concentrates strong teams from one region into a narrow slice of the bracket.

The bracket matters as much as the group

Group position determines which half of the knockout bracket a team enters, and the halves are rarely balanced once the group results are known.

Winning a group can therefore lead to a harder route than finishing second, depending on how the other groups resolved. Teams occasionally face that calculation in a final group match.

Because the bracket is fixed in advance, this asymmetry is baked in before a ball is kicked. The draw sets it up and the results reveal it.

Why an expanded field sharpens the problem

More groups mean more pots and more teams per pot, which widens the quality range inside each one. Compression gets worse rather than better as the field grows.

A larger tournament also produces a longer knockout bracket, so an early advantage in path difficulty compounds across more rounds.

None of this makes the draw unfair in any deliberate sense. It means the ceremony distributes something more consequential than it appears to.
